(EN) A pile of bricks and stones may appear trivial or lifeless but how much life itself actually depends on them? Their sudden absence due to bombings or earthquakes has forced millions of desperate people to risk their lives to embark on a perilous odyssey into the unknown.
(IT) Un mucchio di mattoni e di pietre può essere apparentemente banale o senza vita ma quanto effettivamente la vita stessa ne è direttamente legata? La loro improvvisa assenza a causa di bombardamenti o terremoti ha costretto milioni di persone disperate a rischiare la vita per intraprendere una pericolosa odissea verso l'ignoto.
Many of the Syrian refugees who have survived it arrived in places like this to live in hardship while working in agricultural fields, in any weather condition and without age limit. They are denied basic medical care, education, integration, trapped for generations in a vicious circle of economic and social servitude. Modern slaves, sometimes even paid with fictitious notes valid only in the makeshift shop run by the same landowner they work for and to whom they pay the rent for their family's tent site, provided that they have a family. It might seem like an excerpt from a dickensian story, but all of this is real and continues to happen right now as I write and you read these words.
Molti dei profughi siriani che ne sono sopravvissuti sono arrivati in posti come questo per vivere di stenti pur lavorando in campi agricoli, in qualsiasi condizione meteorologica e senza limiti di età a cui vengono negate cure mediche di base, istruzione, integrazione, intrappolati per generazioni in un circolo vizioso di servitù economica e sociale. Schiavi moderni, a volte pure pagati con banconote fittizie valide solo nella bottega interna al campo gestita dallo stesso proprietario terriero per cui lavorano e a cui pagano l'affitto per il posto tenda della loro famiglia, sempre che una famiglia ce l'abbiano. Potrebbe sembrare l'estratto di un racconto dickensiano peró tutto questo è reale e continua a succedere proprio adesso mentre io scrivo e tu leggi queste parole.
In the shadow of political chaos and mass disinformation, however, there are those who really do something to help the population and to erase those human and cultural barriers artificially inserted by elitist systems. This is the case of Arianna Martini who for over 10 years has been bringing personal aid to refugees and needy, mainly Syrians, through the funds raised with her NGO Support and Sustain Children (supportandsustainchildren.org).
Nell'ombra del caos politico e della disinformazione di massa però c'è chi fa veramente qualcosa per aiutare la popolazione e per cancellare quelle barriere umane e culturali artificialmente innestate dai sistemi elitari. Questo è il caso di Arianna Martini che da oltre 10 anni porta aiuti di persona a profughi e bisognosi, principalmente Siriani, attraverso i fondi raccolti con la sua ONLUS Support and Sustain Children (supportandsustainchildren.org).
I have been coming with her to this refugee camp south of Adana (Turkey) for a few years and I have always wondered what the scenarios of what these refugees once called "home" were like and we will finally see them during this mission near Idlib that we managed to reach thanks to a special permit.
Vengo con lei in questo campo profughi a sud di Adana (Turchia) da qualche anno e mi sono sempre chiesto com'erano gli scenari di ciò che un tempo questi rifugiati chiamavano "casa" e li vedremo finalmente proprio durante questa missione nei dintorni di Idlib che siamo riusciti a raggiungere grazie ad un permesso speciale.
Our old friend Yahya (interpreter and coordinator for SSCh for 8 years who now lives in Turkey) was clearly elated, as I've ever seen him, reunited with his childhood landscapes and his mum again after more than 8 years of absence. I didn't feel like using the camera on that occasion. And even less so the next day when it came time for them to say goodbye once more.
Il nostro vecchio amico Yahya (interprete e coordinatore per SSCh da 8 anni che ora vive in Turchia) era chiaramente euforico, come non l'avevo mai visto, ricongiunto nuovamente ai paesaggi della sua infanzia e alla mamma dopo oltre 8 anni di assenza. Non me la sono sentita in quell'occasione di usare la macchina fotografica. E ancora meno il giorno dopo quando è venuto il momento per loro di dirsi addio un'altra volta.
During our travels in Syrian territory, given its current "Balkanization", we had to pass through various checkpoints controlled by different factions. Patchy areas of large reconstruction works can be seen, interspersed with more or less urban agglomerations, old and new refugee camps, boundless olive groves, idyllic plains and hills, children on the street playing in villages so serene that they would never make you think that here, not long ago, there was a war.
Durante i nostri spostamenti in territorio siriano, data la sua "balcanizzazione" attuale, siamo dovuti passare attraverso vari posti di blocco controllati da diverse fazioni. A macchia di leopardo si notano zone di grandi opere di ricostruzione, intervallate da agglomerati più o meno urbani, vecchi e nuovi campi profughi, uliveti sconfinati, pianure e colline idilliache, bambini per strada che giocano in villaggi così sereni che mai ti farebbero pensare che qui, non molto tempo fa, si combatteva.
But the scars of the conflict are easy to find and in what remains of the corpses of buildings also devastated by an earthquake, you can still see the bullet holes from past clashes. But it is precisely in the holes of the riddled bricks that birds find the perfect nest, as a metaphor for life that must go on.
Ma le cicatrici degli scontri sono facili da trovare e in quello che resta dei cadaveri di palazzi devastati infine anche da un terremoto, si notano ancora i buchi dei proiettili degli scontri passati. Ma proprio nei fori dei mattoni crivellati, gli uccellini ci trovano il nido perfetto, come metafora della vita che comunque non si ferma.
In the course of our three days in Syria, Arianna supervised the transfer of funds to buy and distribute 150 tents, 150 food parcels, 50 specific aids to as many families and particularly needy individuals (such as orphans and people with health problems) and supported basic education projects.
Nel corso dei nostri tre giorni in Siria, Arianna ha supervisionato il trasferimento dei fondi per comprare e distribuire 150 tende, 150 pacchi alimentari, 50 aiuti specifici ad altrettante famiglie ed individui particolarmente bisognosi (come ad esempio orfani o persone con problemi di salute) e supportato progetti di istruzione di base.
Her local team hosted us together with their families, in their houses, tents in other refugee camps. Bakri (Coordinator of operations in Syria) and his team guided us, protected us like friends found again, like long-gone relatives finally reunited.
Il suo team locale ci ha ospitato insieme alle loro famiglie, nelle loro case, tende in altri campi profughi. Bakri (coordinatore delle operazioni in Siria) e la sua squadra ci hanno guidato, protetto come degli amici ritrovati, come parenti lontani finalmente ricongiunti.
Who knows what destroyed Syria? Civil war? Religious War? Dictatorship? External geopolitical manipulation? Probably all of these things together. It is certainly no coincidence though that this has happened in a resource-rich and "non-aligned" Middle Eastern country. The result like so many others is that today Syria is divided into numerous blocs controlled by various political and military forces, near and far. In addition to all this, on the 6th of February 2023, a devastating earthquake of maximum intensity on the Mercalli scale struck.
Chissá cos'ha distrutto la Siria? Guerra civile? Guerra religiosa? Dittatura? Manipolazione geopolitica esterna? Probabilmente tutte queste cose insieme. Certamente non è un caso che quel che è successo sia accaduto in un paese mediorientale ricco di risorse e "non allineato". Il risultato come tanti altri è che oggi la Siria è divisa in numerosi blocchi controllati da varie forze politiche e militari, vicine e lontane. A tutto questo il 6 febbraio 2023 si è aggiunto un devastante terremoto di massima intesità della scala Mercalli.

Le sanzioni dell'occidente continuano a colpire la fascia più debole della popolazione senza risparmiare i più bisognosi ma per i falchi ai governi mondiali - incluse Italia ed Unione Europea - sembra valerne la pena.
At the end of our three-day permit we had to say goodbye to our Syrian comrades before crossing the border into Turkey again. After the various checks and about half a kilometer of walking towards the last barrier, we heard a distant whistle. We turned around and saw our friends in the distance on the other side of the nets. They waved their hands in a last goodbye that had more of a "don't forget us" feeling.
Allo scadere dei nostri 3 giorni di permesso abbiamo dovuto salutare i nostri compagni siriani prima di varcare nuovamente il confine con la Turchia. Dopo i vari controlli e circa mezzo chilometro di cammino verso l'ultima barriera abbiamo sentito un fischio lontano. Ci siamo girati e scorto in lontanaza dall'altra parte delle reti i nostri amici. Agitavano le mani in un ultimo saluto che aveva più la sensazione di un "non dimenticatevi di noi".
